Single Handed Casting Instruction
Rick Whorwood's Fly Casting School

Overview

Why Single Hand Casting? - Anticipating a school of tarpon moving slowly across the flats; watching a rather large brown trout sipping size 18 Tricos; or patiently waiting for that one shot at a pod of fast moving albacore; this is no time to second guess your ability as a fly caster. Casting distance, double hauling or being accurate with a fly rod takes hours of dedication. More importantly, you need to understand the essentials and practice with a purpose. As a Master Casting Instructor, I take great pride in working with my students and watching their progress. Their written testimonials, e-mails and phone calls are always gratifying and much appreciated. If you’re just getting started in fly-fishing or looking to improve on established skills, for that trip of a life time, I can design a course that will make your time on the water more enjoyable.

Course Outline and Equipment

In order to maintain an optimal learning environment, the instructor/student ratio will be no more than 1 to 6. Groups and individuals are welcome. If you like, you can to bring your personal gear. I will also have some equipment to suit, regardless.

All courses begin with an orientation of equipment, and its assembly. Looking to purchase that first outfit, or need help on deciding what gear you'll need for that up-coming trip; there will be time to cover these and other questions.

Courses:

Just Getting Started: This course will give you the necessary skills to get you started in fly-fishing. We'll cover: the roll cast, casting loops, single haul, shooting line and the pick-up and lay down cast. Also, we will have a discussion on lines, leaders and tippets. You will learn how to present your fly to the fish, and develop an understanding of the different fly patterns and their applications. In addition, we can plan a day on the stream to put this information to use.

Intermediate Caster: An evaluation will be done on your casting skills; at this point we'll custom design a program to suit your needs. Normally, this course focuses on improving distance and accuracy. Casts covered include: advanced roll casts, presentation casts, double hauling, and single hand spey casts.

Advanced:  For students who are interested in FFF Casting Instructor Certification, I have put together a program that will deal with all the information and casts needed to prepare you for the test.

Optional Fly & Leader Workshop

I'm also offering a workshop on how to tie trout flies (traditional or contemporary patterns). A discussion on knots and leader design is included. This session will be 3-4 hours in duration and compliments the single hand casting courses.
